During the orientation we will go over the system for using the grain-bin and take personal information that let's the team know who each co-op member is and how to reach them. At this time they may also specify if they would like to be included only on the feed-co op email list or sign up for other notifications.

Jacob Springs Farm is a beyond organic, "everything farm" (description) located near Boulder, Colorado on the southeast corner of Arapahoe road and 75th street.

Purpose
(mission and vision)

Ethics>Principles>Strategies>Techniques

History
Jacob Springs Farm was founded by André and Vanee Houssney in the summer of 2010 when they bought the Condon/Debaker property close to Boulder. Prior to the purchase, the farm, located at Jacob's Corner, had been named Cottonwood Farm after a row of giant cottonwood trees which had been planted along Arapahoe Road (originally called Valley Road) in the 1860's. Since the cottonwoods were now gone, having been cut down in 2005 when Arapahoe Road was widened, and since the Condon Family had chosen to continue using the name "Cottonwood Farm" on land they lease from the Jacobs family to the West of 75th street.

Goals
*Education of young farmers through WWOOF and internships
*Demonstration of a model of profitability in regenerative family farming
*Production of high quality products that are healthy and nutrient dense
*Wholesale ecological restoration of our property as well as adjacent and leased land
*Achievement of a high level of animal well-being through reproducible animal husbandry practices
*Refinement of our target market through CSA, direct sales, and other means
*People care including health and safety, work satisfaction, spiritual well-being, team dynamics and morale
*Demonstration of the Kingdom of God through Christian community, love and service

Daily Schedule
The farm schedule begins each day Monday through Saturday at dawn (see Jacob Springs dawn start times calendar) with a 15-20 minute meeting prior to chores. Volunteers, wwoofers, and farm team members are expected to attend. Chores follow the meeting. Workers are invited to join in a (typically) wonderful breakfast following chores. Over breakfast, we typically engage in an informal discussion topic. After breakfast, special projects continue until 11 or noon.

see also
*What to expect for volunteers
*What to expect for WWOOFers

Philosophy
Farming God's Way
We believe that the solutions for the problems in agriculture; from problems with profitability and production to problems with pollution and waste, are fundamentally ecological and not technological. We therefore look to solutions in nature. Natural systems are productive and balanced. As we observe the patterns in nature and seek to emulate them, we believe that we are learning to think the thoughts of the creator. This is what we mean by farming God's way. This principle prompts us to seek out solutions in farming principles such as Permaculture, Holistic Range Management, and others.

Labor
*Dull work is not just for dull people. Many of the worlds best ideas came to people working dull jobs, lots of our labor is boring, it's true, ut this frees our kids to contemplate deeper things for many more hours a week than the typical worker within an information economy. We strive to take pleasure in the routine and boring aspects of farming, just as in the exciting and stimulating ones.

*Labor and rest - We believe that hard work is good. Work is a necessity, not only for survival but for people to reach their highest potential. At the same time we believe that rest is essential for humans to thrive (main article:Sabbath). The fourth commandment of the law of Moses, as recorded in the Bible reads "Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath." In farming, there is always more work to be done, it can therefore be easy for work to consume all your time. Although this may seem to be productive, there comes a point where constant work degrades the effectiveness of the worker and the discipline of rest must be observed to keep the worker sharp. More commonly perhaps, people are inclined to be unproductive, excessive rest or recreation is dulling to the senses and reduces the productive output of a life. We acknowledge the ancient wisdom of "Six days you shall labor" and "Remember the sabbath"

*How to make a mistake is one of our guiding principles for how to work together.

Current people
*André Houssney - lead farmer and visionary
*Vanee Houssney - communication and administration
*Daniel Rankin - technology and farm hackerspace director
*Kierstyn Bristol - herdsman

*Ashley Urban- dairy commissioner and value-added products wizard
*Lauren Hoos- chef extraordinaire and people care

Current people
I put the wires into a pvc pipe with holes drilled every foot.

Then I connected the wires to the microcontroller, did some programming with the open source nodemcu firmware (writing in lua), and pushed and pulled the data to and from thingspeak, using another github library I wrote: https://github.com/wordsforthewise/esp8266-send-thingspeak

All fruit trees are $20 each - these are bare root trees shipped from Washington State. Bare-root trees need to be planted soon after delivery and will be around 48" tall and various diameters ranging from 7/16" to 3/4" in diameter (depending on availability). These trees, potted, will sell for over $100 at local nurseries.

Come over to our farm to see trees that have been planted the last few years and to get an idea of how large and healthy these trees are.

We have planted and grafted nearly a hundred trees and have sold over 1,000 of these trees in the last few years with great results.

We have selected varieties for that will have the best chance of doing well here in Colorado -

Apple, Pear, Cherry, Peach, Nectarine, Apricot, and Plum trees are available

You will need to pay in advance and we will let you know when the pickup window will be in time for planting.

This is a great chance to get a bargain price on trees that would otherwise be selling for much more!

Plant an orchard!

Thanks,

Jacob Springs Farm is a beyond organic, "everything farm" (description) located near Boulder, Colorado on the southeast corner of Arapahoe road and 75th street.

Current people
*Vanee Houssney - communication and administration
*Daniel Rankin - technology and farm hackerspace director

Philosophy
Labor

*Dull work is not just for dull people

*How to make a mistake

From the flier
Our herd share is designed to provide our community with great milk. In May of 2005 the Colorado state legislature recognized that people should have the freedom to consume raw milk. Despite the fact that it is now legal to drink fresh milk from a cow that you own, there are still relatively few raw milk dairies in operation in our area. As with our Jacob Springs Farm Meat CSA, we are committed to Organic production, but that’s just the beginning - we seek to benefit people, planet, pastures and our livestock. We are entirely grass-based and we use rotational grazing as a tool for regenerating pastures, building soil and sequestering carbon. We would love to fill you in on the details - ask us!
The quality of our food matters! That’s why we focus on grass - the foundation of milk that’s rich in Omega-3’s, CLA’s, Vitamins, Beta Carotene and many other important nutrients. That’s also why we choose to milk Jersey cows (whose milk is rich in components) and why we test our cows to be sure that they only carry the A2 Beta Casein gene (see “The Devil in the Milk” for more information).
We love building community! We are looking to expand the milking team by adding some “work shares” ask us if you feel you might be a good fit to take on some milking responsibilities to offset costs.

Milk Shares from Jacob Springs Farm
Last year was the first year of the Milk Share program. This year we are milking four cows and inviting you to join in!

What: Premium, raw, grass-based milk from happy cows at your own local farm!

Why: because milk, the way it is supposed to be, is so marvelous! Healthy Jersey cows - that graze on organic grass and carry only the unmutated A2 beta casein gene - make the richest, most healthful milk for you to enjoy.

How: It’s a herd share - we provide you milk from your own cow! We will care for her, feed and milk her, and the milk is yours! We don't pasteurize it, but you can if you want to! The share costs $50 plus $52 per month boarding for a gallon per week share (about $12/gal).

Where: Pick up weekly at the farm: Jacob Springs Farm

Butter Brigade (discontinued program)
Join the Butter Brigade!
An elite group of 8 members are invited to join the butter brigade. These heroic volunteers, working in pairs, come to the farm each week - one day per month for each individual - and prepare value added dairy products like butter, cheese, yoghurt, cream, ice cream and other goodies using the farm’s equipment and facility, we then split the goods between us.
For cheese, justice and the American whey!

(program terminated because of scheduling complexity and high demand for regular shares)

Cows
As of February 2015, our herd consists of three A2A2 tested first-calf heifers, Daisy and Belle are purebred registered Jerseys purchased in July 2014 from a commercial dairy in Utah, Veronica is a 7/8 Jersey 1/8 Shorthorn cross, she came from a family of nurse cows from a ranch in Larkspur, Colorado.

Raw milk shares contract
Since the program is structured as a herd share program, legal agreements are required to transfer shares in the herd and provide a structure for care of the animals. These documents are included here for reference.

The Henmulator (hen emulator) is Agronomo and Jacob Springs Farm's incubator for Jacob Springs poultry programs. It was the inaugural project to incorporate open source hardware and software into useful farm devices.

Earlier versions
Mike Soltys' engineering class at the University of Colorado created the first version of the henmulator - found here. It was a plywood box with an arduino system controlling temperature and turning off the egg turner after 18 days of incubation. The project was never entirely working but it was an important step in developing the henmulator.

Enclosure
The henmulator enclosure is an old upright freezer that stopped working a few months before the henmulator project began. It's internal volume is around 16 cubic feet (450 li) It was modified by removing the built-in shelves, cutting a window and vents into the door and re-trimming the interior of the door, painting the door yellow and adding draw latches. The latches were added because the door failed to seal after it was modified. Andre recommends not removing the magnetic seal of freezers while modifying them because it's difficult to reinstall them exactly flat making a good seal difficult. (This particular freezer door, however, had prior issues with the seal being fully shut anyway.)

Working parts
Temperature controls
The henmulator heater is a bank of 5 light bulbs in a fixture that was salvaged from a dumpster in a demolition site. It was re-wired so that two sets of two bulbs function in series. Equipped with 100 watt incandescent bulbs the total wattage is 300 watts since four bulbs (the ones in series) are operating at half power and one at full power. If any one of the bulbs burns out the wattage is reduced to 200 watts and if any two burn out the wattage will be 100 watts. See also incubation#bulbs in series

Air circulation
Two 110v fans salvaged from microwave ovens circulate the air in the Henmulator, on at each end of a duct that pulls air from the (inside) top of the enclosure and pushes it out at the bottom across the heating element. Andre estimates that one fan would probably suffice.

Humidity controls
The Henmulator as originally built was equipped with a home humidifier purchased at a thrift store that was controlled by the arduino via a relay. Plans are in process to replace this with a USB powered floating humidifier purchased online for less than $10, the advantage of this is that it makes the relay unneeded, although there are concerns about longevity.

Rotation
Electrical wiring
Control system
The control system uses an arduino pro mini with a HTU21D humidity and temperature sensor and two relays. one relay controls the heater and the other controls the humidifier.

The quality difference is visible and is due to the much higher nutrient content of a egg raised where chickens are being fed a much more varied and interesting diet than is practical on a commercial scale. ]]

One of Jacob Springs Farm's most popular programs is the self-serve egg bin on the farm. Eggs can be purchased from the egg bin, which is simply an old chest freezer, at any time, however, eggs are only added to the bin Monday through Saturday at around 8:30am. Frequently, eggs are sold out within a few hours of being placed in the bin.

Eggs are sold for $10 per dozen. Egg buyers are encouraged to bring their old, empty cartons when the come to buy eggs.

Care and feeding of our egg flock
Our hens are fed a wide variety of foods, most salvaged from pre-consumer waste from a local organic burrito factory and waste produce from a local organic grocery department. A small amount of Fehringer Farms' organic, no-corn, no-soy layer feed is occasionally fed supplementally. In winter, when few forages are available, hens are often penned in the barnyard, here they assist in the composting program as cheep labor employed to turn and scratch through the pile. Spring, Summer and Fall, they live on the Jacob Springs eggmobile, out at pasture. Each year we rotate between starting chicks of one of three large bodied breeds of brown egg laying chicken, Black Australorp, Barred Rock, and Cinnamon Queen with a smattering of dark egg laying Welsummer and green-egg-laying Easter-eggers sprinkled in for variety. Each year we focus on one of these breeds for replacement of the older hens of that breed, who are ushered into our spent hen program as soon as the young of that breed are about to start laying, in this way we can immediately tell the age of the hen by her color and we can easily cycle our flock without unproductive, older hens overstaying their time. We retain eggs of a particular breed for incubation and hatching in out Henmulator incubator the summer before they are slated for the cooking pot.

Regenerative Agriculture Wiki (RAWiki) is a central repository of articles outlining principles, techniques, insights and experience related to Regenerative Agriculture in principles, theory and practice.

The RAWiki project is an attempt to collect, develop, curate and disseminate practical and theoretical information on these very important topics. The aim is to develop a comprehensive body of knowledge, information and wisdom that people can draw upon as well as to develop a community of contributors who can share their knowledge and experiences with others. The RAWiki project uses the MediaWiki platform to maximize interoperability with wikipedia. The project currently has NUMBEROFARTICLES articles and stubs of articles waiting to be expanded.

We, the founders of this project, think RAWiki is important. We believe that the techniques of regenerative agriculture represent some of the planet's best hopes for creating a "win-win" between the need to feed a growing human population and the equally important need to regenerate a planet that is increasingly being damaged by our human interaction with it. Agriculture is the primary way that humans interact with their ecosystem and impact the surface of the earth, it's water and air. Regenerative agriculture has the potential not only to address these vital problems in a meaningful way, but to provide livelihoods to millions of undervalued people in rural areas and developing countries while contributing to human health and well-being with quality, nutrient dense foods.

From our personal experience, we don't believe these goals are the result of impractical, dreamy idealism. We have implemented and proven their practical and profitable application in both the local and global markets. These ideas work, both in the context of a wealthy developed country, and among the poorest people on earth in a developing context. Despite our success, these visions and models have not become widespread. Through this wiki, even if only in a small way, we hope to document the successes of regenerative agriculture, influence others to implement these ideas and to support them in doing so.

History
RAWiki began as a project of Andre Houssney and Daniel Rankin of Jacob Springs Farm, near Boulder Colorado, in addition to providing their community with ethical animal proteins and sustainably-grown produce, Jacob Springs farm has a mission to show leadership in the agro-ecology movement through the spread of information. RAWiki began as a part of that effort.

Why develop a new wiki?
We believe in the mission of Wikipedia, and we are actively editing, linking to, and improving wikipedia content. However Wikipedia does not go far enough:
#Wikipedia does not allow practical “how to” material - techniques and application
#“Principles” of regenerative agriculture are difficult to cite within the wikipedia framework.
#Experiences and narratives of others who have applied different techniques do not have a place on wikipedia.
#Wikipedia requires a “neutral point of view”. In an industry dominated by corporate agriculture, sustainability is unfortunately not “neutral” and most research represents corporate-sponsored views.

Point of View
The Jacob Springs RAWiki (regenerative agriculture wiki) does not adhere to the "“neutral point of view” guidelines of wikipedia, rather, RAWiki promotes an agroecological (specifically Christian agroecological) worldview.

Those who join in editing and authoring this content do not need to agree in every respect,

STATE UNIVERSAL GOALS
actions flow directly from our worldview and we organize the main content of this wiki in the following order of descending importance:

Knowing God (theology) > Ethics > Principles > Strategies > Techniques

Examples of RAW pages
Permaculture: the RAW project article on permaculture allows the main principles of permaculture to be displayed in an organized, concise way that allows it’s claims and insights to be evaluated based on scientific knowledge and practical experience. RAW links it’s pages on permaculture directly to other pages and articles related directly to sustainable agriculture - for example the article on Permaculture: Fruit tree management links to pages with more documented Scientific knowledge such as “Apple Tree: (Malus Domestica)” and “Apple Scab (Venturia inaequalis)” as well as articles relating to other techniques of sustainable orchard management such as “Silvopasture” and “Regenerative Orchard Management” and articles about people putting these techniques to work like “Lost Nation Orchard”.

"I want to help!" What can I do?"
Many different skills are needed to write and edit articles and cite sources to expand the scope, accuracy and usefulness of the wiki. Contributors from a wide variety of different backgrounds and those with different knowledge levels are welcome to participate.

RAWiki is seeking help with the development of the project from administrators, writers, illustrators and photographers, editors, researchers and fact checkers, and, especially, practitioners, those, such as farmers, ranchers, gardeners and animal breeders with practical experience as "doers" involved in implementing some aspect of regenerative agriculture.

See also" RAWiki contributors

Here are some ideas for those who want to help:
*Edit current pages for accuracy, style and organization
*Expand current pages which are incomplete
*Research supporting documentation and link to these sources
*Identify “red links” (linked topics with no article written about them) and write the linked articles
*Identify important topics which are not currently covered by the wiki and create stub articles for future expansion*
*Create new pages on farms and farmers “doing it right”
*Update Wikipedia with useful, relevant data from RAW and include links to RAW in relevant wikipedia pages
*Interview sustainable farmers on relevant topics and summarize their experience and advice with appropriate citation and caveats.
*Observe and describe regenerative practices at Jacob Springs Farm or other farms "doing it right"

Examples of pages that need to be researched and written
*Important grazing species - identify the 25 most important species of perennial plant to grazing systems globally - categorize them by biome (e.g. Miombo forest, oak savannah, north american great plains etc.); create a template for presenting information relevant to herdsman on each pant species - create stub articles about each species using information from wikipedia and grazing science handbooks.
*Important crop species - identify the 25 most important food crops globally - create a template for presenting information relevant to farmers on each pant species - create stub articles about each species using information from wikipedia and other sources.
*Important pest species - identify the 25 most important pest species globally - create a template for presenting information relevant to farmers and herdsmen on each pant species - create stub articles about each species using information from wikipedia and other sources.
*Holistic grazing - write on the Savory Institute and Alan Savory, link to his TED talk and his books.
*Incubation - summary of available science and best practices for hatching eggs on small and medium scales - what effect does temperature and humidity have on success rate? How tightly do these conditions need to be held? - advantages and disadvantages to allowing a hen to hatch her own eggs,
*Permaculture guilds - review permaculture material and scientific material to try to tease apart “hype” from potentially useful interactions between species in Permaculture “guilds”. Devise a way to rate the effectiveness of a guild - collect anecdotes and testimonials from the web and other sources about people using guilds to good effect.

67.176.57.155:

Regenerative grazing is the use of grazing animals, chiefly herbivores, but also omnivores such as swine and chickens to a lesser extent, to restore and regenerate ecosystems.
Akin to rotational grazing, restorative or regenerative grazing involves bunching livestock together in tight herds. Flocks and herds must be confined to areas small enough to apply sufficient grazing pressure on plant communities to achieve even grazing (where all species are affected through grazing and trampling). Grazing stock must also be excluded from grazed land for an adequate recovery interval.

Philosophy
God’s Design for Savanna and Grasslands
In order to restore grazing land, we begin by observing the patterns which hold natural ecosystems in balance. The characteristics of these incredibly productive natural systems serve as a model and framework.
*Grasslands are characterized by deep, organic soils with high water retention
*Grasslands harbor biodiverse and productive plant and animal communities
*Herds of herbivores pressured by predators are observed bunched and continually moving across landscapes
Key Concepts
Overgrazing
Definition: A pattern in which biodiversity and plant density is declining due to overselection of palatable forages by grazing animals. Favored plant species are repeatedly grazed without a sufficient recovery interval, eventually killing the plants and shifting the balance of species toward less favored species. This eventually leads to oxidizing soils, declining moisture retention of landscapes and desertification.

In natural systems, despite very high densities of grazing animals, overgrazing is not observed. Overgrazing is caused by:

*Under-stocking of land
*Wide-area dispersal of livestock rather than bunching
*Sedentary practices with few/infrequent movements of herbivores

Grazing Interval
This grazing interval must be appropriate to the rate of vegetative growth of the pasture plants, keying in on the desired species: grasses, legumes, shrub or tree browse forages, or even weeds. In rapidly growing pastures, very short intervals are required such as moving daily or even more frequently. Where growth is slow, intervals as long as one or even two weeks are possible.

A critical control point is to adjust the duration of the grazing interval to:
*Prevent the “second bite”; where an animal returns to a regrowing plant and grazes the regrowth
*Control the “Zone of Repugnance”
*Achieve a healthy pressure and trampling effect, but not enough to destroy
Benefits of Regenerative Grazing
Pasture Benefits
Rapid graze-down and trampling results in benefits for plant and soil microbe communities when coupled with a good recovery period.
*Grazing Effects:
**“Leveling the playing field” for plant biodiversity: favoring species that are capable of rapid vegetative regrowth
**“Sloughing” (root/shoot balance) increases soil carbon & microbial habitat in the rhizosphere (root zone)
**Maximizing vegetative growth by preventing senescence (old age dormancy) in pasture plants
*Trampling Effects:
**Improving soil structure through “herd effects” - soil and plant disturbance
**Planting through hoof action - causing good soil contact for seeds
**Soil shading, moisture retention and regulation in soil surface micro-environment due to trampling
**Nutrient “flush” at the right time for plant regrowth through concentrated dunging
Herd and Herdsman Benefits
Regenerative grazing has benefits to livestock and herdsmen, increasing herd health, productivity and profitability.
*Short grazing and long recovery intervals minimize intestinal parasites (which reproduce on the ground)
*Increasing long-term diet diversity improves protein availability as favorable forage plants increase
*Improving pastures support increased carrying capacity and larger, more productive herds
*Opportunity for silvopasture with perennial pasture plants, shrubs and trees (which unmanaged herds may kill)

Ecosystem Results
*Deeper, richer soils with more organic matter, moisture retention and nutrient availability over time
*More productive and biodiverse plant communities over time
*More ground water stored, slowed, less runoff and erosion, increased reliability in stream and spring flows
Keys for Application
*Bunching and excluding strategies: tethering or hobbling, shepherds/herdsmen, hard/living/electric fence types
*Eliminate the “second bite”
*Graze “60-30-10” eaten, trampled, standing - adjust based on “key species”
*Enforce appropriate recovery time!
*Observe interactions and adjust
*Introduce “randomness”
*Kraaling: enclosing animals at night for safety and to concentrate dung for agriculture uses
*Understand stages of vegetative growth
*Encourage use of multiple grazing and support species; the “flerd” poultry, pigs, wildlife
