A swarm of honeybees occurs when an established colony of bees attempts to reproduce by naturally dividing. During a swarm event 60% or more of the colony's bees will permanently leave the hive together with the old queen and seek out a new location.
A capturing a swarm can be a great way for a beekeeper to establish a new colony and it is good for the bees too, especially in areas with few natural locations for hives.
