Identifying important crop species begins with being familiar with what grows well in your region/climate. Knowing what will provide the most nutrition and grow the best based on the changing of the seasons is key to maximizing the efficiency and health of your pastures and the herd.

Rye Grass

Rye planted late fall can give your herd a winter boost and a big jump start early spring as it will germinate at lower soil temperatures than just about anything(°33f) and survive air temperatures well below freezing giving it the ability to crowd out suffocate and kill unwanted cheat Grass and weeds also saving you money on hay. As temperatures warm and days get longer in the spring rye will seed out very rapidly so moving the herd through the rye pasture as quickly as possible will be advantageous.

Rotation intervals- I found 15-20 days to sufficient rest after first graze to let your herd make another pass if you choose.
