What is cider?

In most of the world, cider is fermented apple juice. It's that simple. However in the United States during the prohibition era, cider came to mean unfiltered apple juice. Companies like Martenilli's that had previously made alcoholic cider transitioned to making sparkling apple juice and continued to call it "cider".
