There are many methods of edible mushroom cultivation including log, stump, wood chip, sawdust, and straw culture. Other media such as coffee grounds can be used as well. The level of effort, control, sterilization, and also reliability is vastly different between small-scale mushroom cultivation and commercial-scale mushroom cultivation.
